Tony Stewart at Texas in carHow much more interesting would the Sprint Cup Series be if Tony Stewart were to become a team owner?

According to Fox Sports’ Lee Spencer that possibility was the hot rumor around the Phoenix International Raceway garage on Friday.  It seems that Tony may be talking with Haas CNC Racing and Chevrolet about a partnership that would return Stewart to the Bow-tie fold as a driver-owner.  And where there is Smoke - there is news.

Lately a few of us had speculated that that Stewart might be a candidate for the #33 seat and General Mills sponsorship at Richard Childress Racing.  Others, like my buddy Steve, think that Stewart’s relationships with Joe Gibbs Racing and various pals will stop any potential defection.  I wonder if Chevrolet felt that way about their JGR connections before the Coach and the kid said sayonara?

When I brought the latest Tony Stewart rumor up to a colleague a little while ago, he said to me; “…well if he goes to his own team, he’ll never win again.”

I’m not so sure about that.  But who’s to say that Tony Stewart would have to drive for his own team?  The late Dale Earnhardt never drove for Dale Earnhardt Inc in a Cup race, did he?  Of course he did drive the same manufacturer’s car as the team he owned used.

Regardless, this is shaping up to be the story of the year in NASCAR.  I do think that the Stewart camp is floating some of this stuff to enhance Tony’s negotiating position with JGR or RCR or whomever.  But I’m sure glad that they are.

Phar Phetched rumor? (DAMN “ph” virus, can’t shake it!)

Will having the Gibbs #20 with a Toy skin and engine stop Tony from owning a Chevy based Cup or Nationwide team?

Why should it, it hasn’t stopped Tony from using and getting support from Chevy for his midget, Silver Crown and USAC sprint car teams.

Chances of Tony owning a team I’d put about a 30% as long as he’s driving and about a 90% after he retires or during his “farewell tour.”

WOW Charlie, did you lose the key to the Home for the Mentally Challenged again?

I keep tellin’ ya not to leave it within reach of the inmates.

There’s is a good side to him, er… I mean IT getting out, they seldom make a return engagement they just drop their little turds of wisdom and scamper off to do damage elsewhere.

First off, Kurt … your views on Toyota entering the Sprint Cup fold are some of the most one-dimensional, closed-minded that I’ve heard in quite sometime. Let’s not forget that this “America” you love so much also just happens to encourage the growth of Toyota right here in our very own country, so NASCAR’s about the last direction you should be pointing that angry finger of yours.

As for this rumor with Stewart, I believe whole-heartedly that Stewart will remain with Gibbs as a driver … probably throughout his entire career. Tony’s a very loyal guy, which is probably why he & Zippy have the longest running driver / chief relationship in NASCAR. Does that mean he couldn’t potentially own his own team? Sure, and I think that a struggling team like CNC Haas would be a great candidate for such a venture. However, if this were to happen, I think the team would more than likely move to Toyota for a couple of reasons: 1) I’m sure Stewart / Gibbs’ contract with Toyota would prohibit Stewart from promoting another manufacturer in the Cup Series; and 2) Stewart would want to form a partnership between his team & JGR, and in order to completely exhaust all potential available resources and get the most out of the partnership, it would require that all of the racecars between the two organizations to be the same brand.

OK Charlie, I had to go all the way to Australia to add some flesh to your rumor sandwich. (See Page 10)

Paul Menard, allegedly, reportedly, supposedly (and all the rest of the weasel words used when breaking wind on a rumor) is buying Haas Racing.

(WARNING: coffee thru the nose alert)

After this season Martin Truex Jr. moves to the new Menard (MenHaas?) owned Haas outfit (HaasNard?) and because Menard was a sponsor of Tony in open wheel Smoke will follow Truex and they will all be happy forevermore driving Bow-Ties!.

Go ahead you bunch of foil-hat wearing conspiracy nutcakes, spin around on that one for a while.

Good topic for Tuesday night huh Charlie?

Where did you find that? Or did it just come to you in some equatorial, heat-stroke induced, star gazing moment similar to what happens to your famous fainting goats.

  7. Tony Stewart Rumors Continue to Circulate on April 14th, 2008 10:12 am

[...] and once again the center of attention is NASCAR’s most controversial driver, non-other than Tony Stewart – or, the man we’ve come to know as [...]

You leave my lovable, but stupid, fainting goats out of this. (The herd is up 8 8 BTW, I think 2 “fainted” when they shouldn’t have. Or are cheap hussys, not sure which)

Hey, you don’t like my Aussie link to the conspiracy? Believe it, or don’t… but that news site is pretty reliable, although the Menard story is from “unconfirmed sources.”

So was the basis for “Close Encounters of the Third Kid. I mean Kind” ;-)

Ya Know Charlie, it’s pretty sad. You work your butt off perpetrating a good Smoke rumor and where does it getcha?

Nowheresville I tell ya, out standing in the cold, with no credit given.

It almost makes a fella want to go straight. As Bullwinkle once said: “I gotta get me another hat!” (Foil of course)

Nice find Marc. The writer should have given credit to Lee Spencer for the “Smoke smoke”. All I did was help spread Lee’s goodies.

What do you suppose old Bullwinkle would have said if he’d pulled Max Mosley from that hat?

I’m with Tim on this one. As long as Tony Stewart is racing, he will not venture into team ownership at the Cup level. I could only see that partnership happening if he decides to no longer race in the Cup Series.
I could see it if it means setting up a Truck Series team for Chrissy Wallace and/or Shane Howard, who drove for Smoke Motorsports in the Hooters Pro Cup Series.

Got something to say?
