Randy Moss makes his debut as a Craftsman Truck Series owner.

Untitled PostHow will the staid and conservative NASCAR world accept the flamboyant Randy Moss? Moss has never been at a loss for words around a microphone. His antics on and off the football field have made for some interesting sound bites. That type of personality may take some getting used to by the NASCAR community. But his unique perspective should make for some interesting press conferences as we go forward. And please-PLEASE–NASCAR don’t adopt the crooked hat as the newest trend. The last thing NASCAR needs is Robby Gordon walking the garage area with an arm full of tats, his hat askew and the new trendy baggy fire suit..

Going forward from here for the Sprint Cup boys will mean a seventeen week odessy without time off for good behavior. This stretch to the end of the season is long, hot and unmerciful. Short tracks, plate races, cookie cutters and a road course will lead to some wild times over the next stretch.

Which leads us to this weeks BUZZ ON PIT ROW:

Would the last off weekend of the season be better placed before the first race in The Chase?

Kasey Kahne had the field covered at Pocono on Sunday.

Untitled PostKahne beat Brian Vickers and perennial Pocono winner Denny Hamlin to the finish line for his second win in three weeks. After a race that found many of NASCAR’s elite complaining about everything at Pocono except trees, Kahne looked refreshed when he stepped out of his Budweiser Dodge.

Kahne had to battle back from 36th place after a botched pit stop forced him to return to pit lane to complete a four tire stop. Originally crew chief Kenny Francis called off a four tire stop to just take two, but not everyone got the message and lugnuts had already been removed from the drivers side of the race car when Kahne sped away. Francis explained it this way:

I got us in a pretty big hole there at the beginning of the race, just tried to take two tires, called off a four tire stop and called a two tire stop, and I thought I saw the tire changer out of the corner of my eye and didn’t realize he had hit some lugnuts already in the front, and got us all the way in the back, 36 or something. And Kasey did a great job driving it back up through the field.

Numerous drivers took pot shots at the racetrack over the week, complaining about the quality of the racing surface, the length of the race itself and the heat. Which leads us to this week’s BUZZ ON PIT ROW:

What should NASCAR do about the races at Pocono?

Let us know what you think about the buzz and we may use your reply on this week’s show. Check out ON PIT ROW at www.onpitrow.com tuesday at 5pm ET, followed by INSIDE ARCA.

Talkin NASCAR Smack with Yao MingNow I REALLY wish I was going to be at Lowes Motor Speedway Sunday. I got this email invitation from Coca Cola that reads in part….

Before the green flag drops to start this weekend’s Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, one pit crew performance will stand head and shoulders above the rest – literally. Seven-foot, six-inch international basketball star Yao Ming and two-time U.S. Olympic taekwondo gold medalist Steven Lopez will be introduced to the world of NASCAR as honorary pit crew members for Kyle Petty’s No. 45 Coca-Cola team – including the opportunity to join the crew in conducting simulated pit stops. In return, the two Olympians will give members of the Coca-Cola Racing Family a glimpse into their world – with Yao challenging some of NASCAR’s top stars at basketball and Lopez teaching Taekwondo moves to a few drivers.

Yao Ming and NASCAR? I smell Brian France behind the Coke bottle (no pun intended ;-) . Actually this sounds like a blast. Check out this list of events.

  • Yao Ming and Steven Lopez in crew uniforms changing tires and performing other pit crew duties with Kyle Petty and the No. 45 Coca-Cola car
  • Yao and Coca-Cola Racing Family drivers shooting hoops and playing “Around the World” in Victory Lane
  • Lopez providing taekwondo tips to Coca-Cola Racing Family drivers
  • Media invited to shoot baskets with Yao, time permitting
  • Yao, Lopez and participating drivers available for soundbites

I’d like the E Bay rights to that Yao uni.  Much as we could use the soundbites for ON PIT ROW, shooting hoops with Yao would be a gas. So would breakin’ a few boards with Steven Lopez.

Maybe I’ll head to Lowes Sunday after-all. Who needs a vacation?

Kasey Kahne parlayed his popularity into a million bucks.

Kahne Most Popular All-Star WinnerKahne used the fan vote to gain entry into the Sprint Cup All-Star race. When Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin had engine problems with their experimental home shop power plants, Kahne was able to race off to a 2 second win over Roush-Fenway drivers Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth.

Kahne joins Michael Waltrip and Ryan Newman as the only drivers to win the All-Star race after racing their way in from the preliminary race.

Which leads us to this weeks BUZZ ON PIT ROW:

Did Kasey Kahne being voted into the All-Star race by the fans diminish his win?

Wind Tunnel vs Tunnel VisionI would like to welcome everyone to tonight’s meeting of Nascaholics Anonymous.  I’m Charlie and I  am a Nascaholic.  But I admit it and I’m trying to get help.

Are you one of the afflicted?  Here are some of the  signs.

  • You have pictures of Wendy Venturini and Krista Voda covering an entire wall – or room – in your home.
  • You write in a NASCAR blog more that you talk to your family.
  • You know the date and time of the next Goodyear tire test for Cup Cars, but forgot Mothers Day.
  • You get pissed when someone disses one of your favorite NASCAR celebrities.
  • Your objectivity blurs when what you want to be true about something in NASCAR, just isn’t so.

There are many more symptoms.  I admit to having some – not the room full of pictures one! – and John Daly should fess up too.

J D’s  The Daly Planet has another one of his NASCAR TV show reviews of Dave Despain’s Wind Tunnel special for the NASCAR All Star weekend.  Once again, the Planet shows its disdain for Despain.  I guess it’s more that John sees disdain in Despain’s attitude towards NASCAR.  John has written this stuff before, taking the lead in blaming the demise of “Inside Nextel Cup” on Dave’s hosting skills.  Here’s a bit from the Planet’s post…

Although Despain has a long and distinguished history with NASCAR, his current relationship with the sport is prickly at best. He seems to continually be on the verge of exasperation where every NASCAR topic is concerned.

Dave Despain was a guest ON PIT ROW  last night.  I admit, he is one of my favorite people in the media.  ON PIT ROW is a mostly NASCAR Cup Series show.  That’s what we talk about.  Dave knows this.  But I have never – not one time – gotten any feeling that he has a negative – or prickly – bias towards NASCAR racing.  He’s a pro.

Speed TV and NASCAR must agree, or prime, showcase opportunities like last night’s All Star special and the acclaimed – even by Daly – show about the history of Daytona International Speedway would go to hosts ….

“….more informed about the specifics of the sport”

I’m going back to the meeting now.  You are more than welcome to join me, J D.

If you have more ideas for signs of Nascaholism tell us.

Busch Rolls Over the Lady in Black

Kyle Busch again made the rest of the Sprint Cup drivers look out classed.

Untitled PostAmid a chorus of boos when introduced and a general lack of fan support The Shrub once again proved to be the class of the field at the newly repaved Darlington Speedway. “The Track Too Tough to Tame” handed out more Darlington Stripes than I can remember in recent history. Drivers seemed to have problems negotiating the 200 mph back straight speeds once they hit turn 3.

The race which saw 40 cars beat the 12 year old track qualifying record was slowed by 8 caution flags. But cautions nor a pit penalty, for a loose lug nut, could slow down Rowdy as he led 169 laps and beat Carl Edwards by more than three seconds. Busch commented on the fan’s less than kind greeting:

“I’m here to race, If I win it just makes them more upset and crying on their way home.”

Busch seemed to revel in the fan’s disgust for his actions the week before. Fans were still blaming him for wrecking fan favorite Dale Earnhardt, Jr. at Richmond on his way to a possible victory. Upon exiting his car in victory lane, he bowed to the mostly jeering crowd in disdain.

Which leads to this weeks BUZZ ON PIT ROW:

Will fan’s dislike for Kyle Busch keep increasing with each win and is it good for the sport?

Give us your comments and we may use them on this weeks ON PIT ROW. Listen to the live stream on Tuesday from 5 to 7pm ET, then stay tuned to INSIDE ARCA from 7 to 8:30pm ET.
