Tim Flock was a two-time Cup Series champion winning his first in a Hudson Hornet and his second in one of Carl Kiekhaefer’s Chryslers. His 18 wins in ’55 stood as the record until ’67. Tim also won NASCAR’s only sports car race, in a Mercedes Benz 300 SL. Flock is also famous for his sometimes co-pilot – a monkey he called Jocko Flocko. I had mistakenly given credit to brother Fonty for Jocko. But Fonty’s grand daughter – Kelly Bair – corrected me. Thanks Kelly.
Glen “Fireball” Roberts won 33 times in 207 starts in NASCAR’s top series. Roberts won the 1962 Daytona 500, had 93 top fives, 122 top tens and 32 career poles. He was nicknamed “Fireball” because he was a hard-throwing high school pitcher. Roberts died after an accident in the 1964 Coca-Cola 600.
Roberts won earlier match ups with Tim Richmond in the round of 32 and his first rounder with Ricky Rudd. Tim Flock beat Davey Allison to get to the Sweet 16 after edging Bob Welborn in round one. Two of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers try to get to the Elite Eight.

Tim Flock. He had 39 wins to Robert’s 33. Drove with a monkey. Drove Hudsons. This is a close one but I’m going with Flock.
Tim Flock
Tim Flock.
Fonty’s grand daughter, Kelly Bair, in the second hour of the 4-14 ON PIT ROW show took her great-uncle in this matchup. Kelly, Jocko and Hudson Hornet all add up to a sweet sixteen win for the Flock family.
Fireball but it’s close. You know it makes me wish i was around to see some of these guys tradin’ paint. Should rerun more of these races on ESPN instead of just Dale SR.
Fireball, but in a really close one
Mr Flock
Fireball Roberts.
