This Budweiser Shootout was pert’ near perfect

I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

“I want a billion dollars and a monkey.” I got what we all hope is just a bite-sized sample of the kind of race the 50th Daytona 500 will be a week from now.
That was one hell of a race, that there Bud Shootout. And it was won by one hell of a driver too - the best restrictor plate racer there ever was, according to second place Tony Stewart.
Smoke said that Dale Jr is probably better at this plate racin’ stuff than his daddy, Dale Earnhardt the Legend. All Senior did was win more times in Florida than the Marlins.
I don’t know about all of that. I do know that I had a big smile on my face at the end of that race. I mean even Tony Stewart seemed happy.
And NASCAR has a real race car in this Car of Today. To a man - announcers, ex-drivers, former crew chiefs - all praised the Car formerly known as the Ugly Little Freakin’ Toad.
Dale Earnhardt Jr, in mid-whoop as he ran his first victory lap in a couple years yelled “We got us a race car boys. Maybe a 500 winner!”
I’ll take that same finish right now. I’d take a whole bunch of different outcomes too. Just keep giving me races where the guys can pass each other and 25 or so of them are doing it.
But if I get the billion dollars and the monkey, I’ll make do.

And shortly thereafter, embraced by his mentor and car owner.
Exactly what Dale Jr. has been needing for years. That support from the top.
Damn cool finish. Yes indeed.
What a great friggin race! And Jr really did deserve that win. I want to see how the new car does on longer tire runs next week, because I was concerned about the wiggle, but it is obvious that the car does put racing back in the hands of the drivers. Loved the slingshot passes, and that Stewart could race Jr so well without the drafting help. Old school racing came back to Daytona!
More good things are sure to come.
Perfect start to the gr8 ‘08!
What is wrong with me?
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Jr. win, JJ come over and congratulate him, Mr Hendrick with a big smile and even Jeffy seem happy that Junior won this thing.
I had a smile on my face. Whats wrong with me?
Maybe it was just a warm after glow from the great racing. I got to listen to some radio coverage before getting home from work to see the finish. I don’t remember much of the drive home. the description of the racing on the radio broadcast was riveting.
This is going to be one fun year. But wait…who am i supposed to root against, other than Jeffy? Somebody give Jimmy Spenser a ride, will ya.
Kumbaya my boys, Kumbaya. Did you notice how fast the cars that were bad at the start became good after the yellow? The smart guys in the garages have figured this thing out over the winter. The plate cars are the ones with supposedly, almost no adjustability.
Keep the monkey, gim’me the billion.
Seems the general consensus the race was very good. Sorry to say I missed it, as Luke can tell you I was busy feeding the kids, kidds (as in goats) chickens and various and sundry creatures around the place.
And how ’bout that qual session! It could be, might be, more Toyotas make the 500 line-up than do Fords. I can hear the halls of Dearborn HQ rumbling all the way to the P.I.
You forgot the ducks, Marc.
