We are barely started in the 2008 season and who can believe what has happened?

Rusty Jarrett / Getty Images for NASCAROne year after “fuelgate” Michael Waltrip has put his NAPA Camry on the front row for next week’s Daytona 500. Oh yeah and the not so surprising part; joining him on the front row–Jimmy Johnson. Johnson hasn’t missed a beat from 2007, by putting his Lowes Chevrolet on the pole.

Here are this week’s Fast lap questions:

1– Should Tony Stewart or Kurt Busch be penalized for their confrontation on the race track during Budweiser Shootout practice?

2– Was this the best Bud Shootout ever?

3– Whose qualifying effort was more surprising; David Reutimann’s or Joe Nemechek’s?

4– Will Casey Mears become an after thought at Hendrick Motorsports?

So, what do you think? Remember; if we like your comments, whether we agree or disagree, we could use them on this week’s broadcast of ON PIT ROW. ON PIT ROW can be heard live via streaming audio every week, Tuesdays at 5pm ET. Just click on LISTEN LIVE on the home page.

    *cracks knuckles*

    Where to begin?

    1)
No. Not just no, hell no. Fined for doughnuts on the access road, before actually being on pit road? While the intention was different, nobody was in any danger whatsoever. At least the #2 team weren’t the only ones fixing sheet metal.

While I do not advocate using cars for retaliation, see “Carl Edwards, Busch Race”, I’ve seen congratulatory doughnuts that did more damage.

If the leaks from the Oval Office Friday night are correct, and Kurt took a little too close of look at Tony’s fist, I’d say it’s all squared up (possible lead to Stewart, perhaps).

That being the case, NASCAR says it’s over, the drivers say it’s over, so take the publicity and keep on trucking. NASCAR asked for it, so do you think they’ll balk at the first sign of it?

If anything were to be handed out, both Kurt and Tony should have to take their crews out for dinner. Not some low down joint, but maybe Ruth’s Chris or something, and then pick up the tab for the other guys crew.

That’s a creative penalty, and something to at least say “Man, I’m sorry about that” to the people that had to fix that mess.

    2)
Not ever, but it was pretty good.

    - Improved racing with the car, although distance most likely factored in
    - Top notch driver + Top notch equipment = Win
    - If this story doesn’t touch you, I don’t know what to say.

I’ll leave it at that, and move on down the backstretch to turn 3.

    3)
Nemechek. He wasn’t expected to be strong, even with a Hendrick motor under the hood.

Beak had more expectation, thus less of a surprise, with all the buzz about how improved MWR and the Camry Boys appeared in Pre-Season Thunder.

    4)
I don’t think so, as long as he performs. The press will naturally line up outside other Hendrick doors, but that makes him none less important in the picture. If anything, it allows him some breathing room to go out and just wheel the car.

    1. Kurt should be penalized for his actions. I know NASCAR wants their dirvers to be more coulourful and natural, but using your car as a weapon is uncalled for. If he and Tony would have gotten out of their cars and laid a beating on each other then I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

    2. No, Jr’s Daddy has that one. Starting last in the inverted field and coming to the front in less than 2 laps in the last 10 lap shootout was the best ever.

    3. Joe. Same reasons as Luke.

    4. No I don’t believe so, especially if he runs the way he did on Friday night.

Casey won’t be an after thought if he wins!

[...] This being the case, in my reflections I keep coming back to something I mentioned on Charlie’s blog. [...]
