Kyle Busch: Best Ever Under 25 Looks Towards Petty’s 200 Wins
by Steve Wronkowicz
I am co-host of the syndicated radio show: ON PIT ROW. Over ten years on the air and three on the net; see what can happen when I don't let the facts get in the way of my opinions.

Kyle “Rowdy” “The Shrub” Busch sweeps the weekend in Virginia.
Not only did Kyle Busch win both NASCAR races at Richmond International Raceway this weekend, he also went to Denny Hamlin’s charity late model event and won that to boot.
Busch had to get by Jeff Gordon late in the race to secure the Cup victory and he had to fend off Hamlin who again led the most laps of the race only to be let down by that ineffective lug nut goop that has claimed so many victims in 2009. Teams are using the same weather seal adhesive that they had used for years, but it seems the longer lug studs that NASCAR mandated for 2009 has messed up the glue’s ability to get the job done.
Kyle’s weekend has given him fifty NASCAR wins spread out over the three major touring series. He has set his sights on two-hundred wins for his career to tie King Richard Petty.
I know it’s not 200 Cup victories like Richard Petty has. It will still be a phenomenal mark for me. I don’t know how long I’ll be in the Camping World Truck Series or Nationwide Series, but hopefully for as long as Joe will let me in the Truck Series, and as long as there’s a Nationwide car at Joe Gibbs that we can run, I’ll be there running races and fulfilling some duties and deals there. Cup stuff is the ultimate priority.
Busch even seems to be able to win some fans over in the process. While the boos were still evident during pre-race introductions, cheers were heard when Rowdy was able to move past Jeff Gordon for the lead. That may be more of an anti-Gordon cheer than a pro-Busch cheer, but a cheer none the less.
This all leads to this week’s BUZZ ON PIT ROW:
Now that Rowdy’s win ties him with Jeff Gordon for most wins before age 25, how will he stack up over the next five or ten years?

Very misleading title. Kyle will almost assuredly never tie Richard’s Petty of 200 Cup victories, and 200 total NASCAR victories in the top three series will definitely not be considered on par with King Richard.
J. Miller … you’re right Busch will probably never reach 200 CUP victories, but if he gets 200 in Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series, I personally think it will be considered BETTER than the King’s victory total simply because of Busch winning on REAL tracks. What I mean is if you look at Petty’s win totals and WHERE they actually occured (like the 1/4 mile Huntsville Speedway — my hometown) and a bunch of other tiny tracks where he was basically the only Cup driver to compete, but he got a ‘cup win’.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the King, but some of his wins are suspect in my book.
These fly by night racers come and go, thats all I heard about Richmond and Gordon was going to break Pettys and Earnhardts 7 championships, bull crap!
this idiot will be a long ago memory in another 5 years, without that extra 50 horsepower Nascar has given the Toyatos he would be back there with Jr.
Welcome to the site guys and thanks for the comments. JMiller–as you said, there is no way in the world that Rowdy will reach the number of Cup wins that The King amassed. The series was running two/three nights a week as TJW said–sometimes against only one or two other “Cup” drivers.
Are they tainted wins? No wins are tainted or less-honorable. But, ask yourself this; is a modern truck win LESS impressive than a Occoneechee Speedway win against only 23 other “Cup” drivers? Not in my book.
Listen to the radio show Tuesday night at onpitrow.com and give the show a call at 800-645-2946 and ya just might get a Kevin Harvick bobblehead.
Kyle’s Nationwide Series wins are really under appreciated. That is one, tough series to win races in. The competition there - as far as the number of cars that have legit ability to win, may be tougher than cup. The top 15 or 20 cars most weeks are capable. And Kyle wins a bunch. If he gets 200 wins in NASCAR, he’ll be one of the best ever for sure. But so was - and is - the King.
Yeah, I know what you mean about some of Petty’s wins (I learned even more about that when I read “The Blount Report.” I recommend it.). It’s true: Busch’s Truck and Nationwide wins (in such a competitve era) can probably be considered more impressive than some of Petty’s back in the day.
I never thought I’d say it, but I’m warming up to Kyle Busch (I’m a lifelong Earnhardt Sr/Jr fan). Busch cares about nothing but the trophy, and that makes for good racing. I actually find it funny when he antagonizes the Junior fans.
It’ll be fun to see if he gets to 200.
JM– Rowdy, as they say, is a polarizing figure. I don’t run into a lot of race fans who claim to be a fan, but there are a bunch who seem to respect his ‘win at any cost” attitude. Hmm–does that remind you of anyone?
