The winner of two consecutive Cup series championships in the 50s against the current defending champ and one of only two drivers to win three straight NASCAR Cups. It’s a fantastic face off in the One and Done Region of the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie.

Buck Baker won NASCAR’s Grand National championship in ‘56 and ‘57. Baker had 46 wins, 372 top tens and 45 poles in his 636 starts. He was a three time winner of the Southern 500. Later started the Buck Baker Racing School, where Jeff Gordon drove his first stock car. So he just lost the anti-Jeffy votes.

Jimmie Johnson has 41 wins, 102 top fives and 158 top tens in his first 261 Sprint Cup Series races. He’s won three consecutive championships - tying Cale Yarborough for that record - was points runner-up in ‘03 and ‘04, won the ‘06 Daytona 500 and three straight Coca Cola 600s from ‘03-’05. And he’s handsome, polite and has a pretty wife. Hate the guy if you want.

Both drivers are multi-time champs. Each has over 40 Cup Series wins. And, they had to beat guys named “Red” in the first round! Who moves on to the Sweet 16? Leave us your opinion i the comments please.

Buck had a great career. Jimmie’s has been shorter, but he has shot higher. Jimmie gets the nod even though he has the freaky red dude in his picture instead of the racing girls.

Head to head, Buck’s numbers are better. However Buck won’t be winning any more races and JJ will.

    Jimmie Johnson wins this one.

I like Jimmie in this one. Buck had his day, but Jimmie still has more days to come.

Baker. He was another driver that mastered Darlington on Labor Day.. And he did it without power steering, power brakes, and cool suits.

    Jimmie.

Baker because of the cars and JJ didn’t win a real Title instead of the made-up chase crap

    JJ aint done yet.

It’s the round of 32. There is no shame in getting beat. Jimmie Johnson has done enough already in his career to maybe make the final four here. He won’t - most likely - but Sweet 16 is almost a lock.

NASCAR.com’s Mark Aumann picked Jimmie Johnson On Pit Row Tuesday April 7. Listen to Mark’s interview on the “Listen Live” page. And make sure you read Mark’s great “Retro Racing” columns at NASCAR.com
