March 24, 2009 12:51 pm EDT 8 CommentsThe first ever NASCAR Cup Series champion and one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers is matched against one of only two drivers to win three straight titles in the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie.
Jimmie Johnson has 40 wins, 101 top fives and 156 top tens in his first 255 Sprint Cup Series races. He’s won three consecutive championships - tying Cale Yarborough for that record - was points runner-up in ‘03 and ‘04, won the ‘06 Daytona 500 and three straight Coca Cola 600s from ‘03-’05. And he’s handsome, polite and has a pretty wife. Hate the guy if you want.
Red Byron won the inaugural NASCAR Strictly Stock championship in ‘49. He won the first NASCAR sanctioned race in ‘48 on the beach course at Daytona. Red finished with two wins and two poles in 15 starts from ‘49-’51. Drove with a special brace fastened to the clutch to support his leg, which he injured in WWII.
Another apparent mis-match by the numbers. But J J is the ultimate example of “not getting credit” for what he has done. Does it happen again here? Leave a comment.

more cups, with different ‘cars’ > 1 strictly stock cup
JJ
JJ, the numbers don’t lie on this one
J.J. all the way.
JJ’s 15.7% winning percentage beats Byron’s 14.6. JJ gets the respect this time, but i was trying to dis him.
Red Byron. Jimmie has just been fortunate to drive for Hendrick his entire career.
JJ Top 15 all-time yet ?
Johnson could have had 5 cups right now, with a break here or there. Three in a row make him a first round winner in my book, against all but a few.
Jimmie Johnson.
