Untitled PostNASCAR’s number two series has undergone a pretty successful transition to new series sponsor Nationwide. Those B-word mentions are infrequent, but the championship points leader has been mentioned almost as infrequent. Clint Bowyer leads the standings, and has done so for most of the year.

I’ll admit my own fault in this, I’ve been more than happy to talk about the Joe Gibbs dominance and anxiously waiting for David Ragan to finally win a race, but Bowyer’s year has been championship caliber. He has 11 straight top 10s and only three finishes outside of the top 10 – and hasn’t finished worse than 25th. That, my friends, is impressive. What may be giving most everyone trouble is that Bowyer’s year has been low-key, matching his personality. He has no pole positions and just one win, which came at Bristol. Yet his 18 top 10 finishes blow everyone else out of the water, as Keselowski and Ragan are next behind him with 13. His year reminds me of Matt Kenseth’s 2003 championship year. He goes about his business, records top 10 finishes, and doesn’t beat himself. Look at the results during this 11-race stretch: 9th, 2nd, 6th, 9th, 4th. 9th, 3rd, 9th, 4th, 7th, 8th. Kenseth would go multiple races inside the top 10, and in his early season stretch in ’03 - from Daytona through Michigan – he finished outside of the top 10 twice. Bowyer’s year has been the same way, and also similar to Kenseth - it hasn’t been covered.

Bowyer’s lead in the standings has been bouncing between 150 and 200 points. Currently, Keselowski sits in 2nd place 170 markers out while Carl Edwards takes 3rd, 201 back. In the final 14 races of the year, this one’s going to be won by one of those three. Edwards seems to have regained his form after coasting the rest of the ’07 year and getting off to a sluggish start in ’08, recording two wins under new crew chief Drew Blickensdurfer since the change was made five races ago. Keselowski has been no slouch, he has nine consecutive top 10s and hasn’t finished worse than 15th since Talladega. He also recorded his first career win at Nashville.

Bowyer might not win the Nationwide title this year, but I hope if he doesn’t, his performance through the first 21 races doesn’t become just a footnote. If he does win the title, it will be because of those finishes earlier in the year no one noticed.

Just from reading the title, let me answer that … “No, not really.”

    A couple of things!

Thank you Matt Mercer! as a Clint Bowyer fan i would like to thank you for this article. Fans who support drivers not considered mainstream or popular struggle with the lack media attention. True fans are there when there is nothing!

As a response to the above comment “No, not really” — You couldn’t be more wrong!

I’m rooting for him too. If a Cup regular is gonna win it…I’d want it to be Bowyer. He has done a lot of time running that Series.

Darn right I care! Clint is a class act, and he’s as old school as they come. I’m pulling for him to win the Championship.

Thanks for writing this article, and kudos to you for your observation about Matt Kenseth… another class act who is often overlooked.

Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards got a lot of publicity the last couple of years with their championship runs in the Nationwide Series because they were having good runs in the Cup Series as well.

Clint has been a consistent performer at RCR, but not a frequent winner. Therefore his name is not on the lips of the casual fan, or on the keyboards of most reporters, leading to an identity crisis of sorts.

Nice job Matt–obviously there are a lot of Clint fans out there.

Darn right I care! Clint’s a great, hard working driver who’s paid his dues. He quietly goes out and gets the job done, and his fans appreciate that. He may be flying under the radar, but the key word is FLYING. I’m looking forward to seeing Clint hoist that championship trophy at Homestead.

You better believe I care!! Clint is on his way to a championship in Nationwide and has been constantly overlooked by the media. Thank you for bringing his hard work and dedication to attention of those trying to dismiss him. Keep your eyes on Clint…..he will continue to show everyone how great of a driver he is.

One of the things that I like about the Nationwide Series is that it has its own stars. Sure, some of them are regulars on the Cup circuit, but the drivers who win the titles in the Nationwide/Busch Series are not the same ones who win the Cup championship - at least, not in the same year. It’s good to see Clint do well. And I like the way that BB&T car looks too.

Yes I care! I’ve been a fan of Clint’s for a long time. The Nationwide title is important to him, so I’m going to make sure I’m watching and rooting on every second! In the Nationwide series consistency will win you a championship, and that has been what Clint has been doing!

Thank you for the article, and GO CLINT GO!

A few of the early responses to this topic obviously misconstrued my response. Do I like Clint Bowyer as a driver? Yes …. Do I respect Clint’s work ethics, personality, and overall composure as a human being? Yes …. Do I care that he’s going to win the Nationwide championship? Not by a longshot, and it has nothing to do with Clint Bowyer and everything to do with the NNS still being a joke in my opinion.

The last two NNS Championships have been won by a Cup Series regular that was also legitimately competing for a Cup title, and they won it by an obscene amount of points at that. While I think that the whole busch-whacking system is necessary to a certain degree from a marketing perspective, the fact that you’re taking developmental drivers out of the championship running in what most people consider to be a developmental series is just ridiculous.

If you want to bring some credibility to the series, then I suggest that they move the NNS over to a Chase format similar to what they’ve done in Cup, but make 3 or 4 of those final 10 races at tracks that are not at the same location that the Cup Series is running at that weekend. Then, those guys can still compete for the NNS championship, but doing so could jeopardize their chances of winning the Cup title.

Yeah I care as a Clint Bowyer fan since his dirt racin’ days. This is pretty cool. I agree there are going to be some great races in weeks to come. GO CLINT!!!

Bowyer is not a checker or wrecker, he understands the advantages of consistency and putting together solid runs. I think he’s going to win the NNS Championship this year to put another notch in the belt. After that I expect to see him concentrate more on Sprint cup in the years to come. That is when I expect to see his name become familiar enough that he gets some decent media attention.

    Go Bowyer Go!
