The final pairing in the On Pit Radio region of the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie pits drivers with 186 wins and seven Cup Series championships between them. And one of them won’t be in the final, four-wide run to the finish. That’s a tough one.
David Pearson is second on the all-time Cup Series victory list with 105 and is a three time Winston Cup champ. He won the ‘76 Daytona 500, set a record for super speedway qualifying by winning 11 straight poles at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In ‘73, Pearson won 11 of the 18 Cup races that he entered. He did all this while rarely entering as many races as his contemporaries.
Jeff Gordon doesn’t have anything left to prove. But he has time to if he thinks of something. With four Sprint Cup Championships, more than 80 wins and 60 poles, Gordon is within reach of all but Richard Petty’s win totals. Gordon has won three Daytona 500s, two Brickyard 400s, four straight Southern 500s at Darlington and was the second driver to win the Winston Million.
The Silver Fox got the best of Herb Thomas in the Sweet 16 round. Gordon dispatched the great Joe Weatherly to qualify to take on Pearson. I have to think about this one for awhile. How about you? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.

GO JEFF GO
Jeffy couldn’t carry Pearson’s helmet bag. The Silver Fox did it without power steering, cool suits, and spotters. David Pearson definitely gets my vote on this one!!
David Pearson is the best driver I’ve ever seen, Bill Elliott is a close second
Jeff is terrific and he may have a hurrah or two left, but Pearson was THE MAN.
Pearson for all my previous reasons, including the “where have you been” comment by Jeffy.
Had Pearson run a full schedule his entire career, he’d have won more championships than The King. Jeff Gordon, while probably one of the best of the current breed of drivers, doesn’t hold a candle to the Silver Fox. Under the current rules and schedule, Jeff won’t match his record.
Got to go with David Pearson. He won 3 titles and 105 wins running a partial schedule in his prime and the Wood brothers as great as they were don’t compare to the Hendrick’s team. Pearson never had a teammate who the for the most part kicks his butt on a weekly basis. I was a Dale Earnhardt fan and Pearson is the only driver who I think could of been better than him.
Tough to see Jeff up against the best of all time in the round of eight. Jeff is no doubt one of the top 6 drivers ever and could do even a little more in his career. But Pearson was the best, hands down!
Don’t know who Keith up above is but sounds like someone is trying to use my name since there has been no other Keith on any other match-ups. And that is pretty sorry! Top 2 drivers all-time and I’m going with Gordon.
Jeff Gordon. Best all-time
David Pearson.
Whenever the question arises of who’s the all-time greatest, the same few names come up. In my mind (for whatever that’s worth), there are only two for whom legitimate rational (not emotional) argument can be made. David Pearson is one of the two. Jeff could probably Pearson’s helmet bag, but Pearson clearly wins.
pearson
the Silver Fox
Gordon, by a fender, getting bump drafted by his contribution to the growth (for better or worse) of the sport into what it is today. He was the poster boy NASCAR needed to get a shot in the arm and grow.
As much as I miss some of the more secluded times, I can’t positively say that without the growth experienced in the 90’s and early 00’s that we would still have a sport. At least as we had come to know it.
ARCA driver Brad Smith told us Tuesday at the Toledo Speedway BAG, that David Pearson won more, in different cars, so he’s the pick.
If I pick Gordon, Steve will pout, since he’s still hurting from a Jeffy snub at MIS two years ago. If I don’t take Gordon, my webmaster will F-Up my site, maybe. Can’t take the risk. I’ll take Gordon. and his 4 championships, and probably more to come.
David Pearson with Jeff Gordon not close. Jeff Gordon could win 24 straight
races and still not have a better win percentage that David.
David Pearson over Jeff Gordon. David Pearson has the best win percentage
in one season (61.1 percent) and Jeff got the majority of his wins during a
five year period in the 1990s.
David Pearson is my choice.
David Pearson. No brainer.
Hey Charlie, screw Luke have some gonads!
David Pearson.
If my site gets screwed up well, you know why.
Marc - Full Throttle is now a Philippine tractor pull site?
David Pearson, ’nuff said.
David Pearson is my favorite driver. i watched him at the Daytona race. I think he is the best. Go David Other drivers are good too!!! Its hard to compare.I lobve the other flat track “offys” throwing dirt around the half mile tracks. Midget racing at nights are some of the great memories.
Go David Pearson!!!!!!!!!!
[...] get to the Final Lap of the Tourney, Pearson’s fans voted him over the likes of Jeff Gordon and the King himself, Richard Petty. Earnhardt fans rallied after a close, first round match up [...]
