Davey Allison was a super star with Hollywood good looks and talent to spare. His 19 wins and 92 top tens in 191 starts don’t tell the story. Davey had “it”. The same “it” that Jeff Gordon and Earnhardt Jr have. He was Raybestos Rookie of the Year and two races in ‘87, won the ‘92 Daytona 500. Was killed in a helicopter crash in ‘93.
Ralph Earnhardt was relentless. He won the ‘56 NASCAR Sportsman Division championship and finished second in his first Grand National - now Cup - series event. Went on to 16 top tens in 51 races entered. Earnhardt was an innovator in car preparation and was one of the first to understand and use tire stagger. Father of seven-time Cup champ, Dale Earnhardt. Died of a heart attack in ‘73.
Earnhardt vs Allison. It’s not like that never happened before. Leave us a comment.

This one is tough, because Allison had a very bright future but it will remain unrealized. So we must look at what was accomplished not what may have been accomplished. With that being said I have to go with Earnhardt.
Too bad Allison wasn’t paired with Rob Moroso or something of the like.
Allison
asphalt over dirt wins
On Tuesday’s ON PIT ROW radio show, Wind Tunnel’s Dave Despain was put on the spot and asked to choose this match up. Despain took Allison even though he admitted to hating inter-generational comparisons. Chalk one up for what could have been
As Charlie said in his synopsis post–Davey had it. Whatever it is, it made him a winner and a fan favorite all at once. Allison by a long shot.
Allison…and had Davey not died so young, there is no way Ralph’s son would have 7 championships.
Davey Allison
Davey Allison. Ralph Earnhardt in the top 50 makes me scratch my head.
Davey Allison.
