March 20, 2009 4:18 pm UTC 7 CommentsNASCAR’s Ironman takes on a guy in wing-tips in this opening round match. One of NASCAR’s steadiest performers against one of it’s toughest owner-drivers. Which one moves on in the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie.
Dave Marcis and his famous wing-tip driving shoes started 883 Cup Series races – second all-time – and finished with five wins, 222 top tens and 14 poles. He was one of the top Winston Cup drivers of the ’70 s and the last, non-factory supported, driver owner.
Terry Labonte is known as NASCAR’s Ironman because of his 655 consecutive Cup Series starts. He won Winston Cup Championships in ’84 and ’96 and grabbed 21 Cup Series wins in his career. Though Terry won just two times each of his championship years, he also had 24 top ten finishes in each . Terry and Bobby Labonte are the only brothers to win Winston Cup championships.
Both of these great drivers are known for perseverance as well as talent. Which one moves on to the round of 32 is up to you. Leave a comment.

Terry Labonte, despite his ‘retirement’ charade.
Marcis should be respected as driver/owner with success, but Terry wins the contest. Great that the random seeding hooks up 2 true ironmen.
2 Cups > no cup + fancy shoes
Labonte
Bobby had lots of nice things to say about Marcis–only problem was–blood is thicker than wing tips. Bobby took brother Terry with his two championships.
I’ll go along with Bobby on this one; Texas Terry it is. Retirement–schmierment–Terry isn’t even close to MM.
In case you can’t tell from Steve’s comment, he actually asked Bobby Labonte to pick a couple of these toss-ups today when he interviewed him for ON PIT ROW. Pretty cool. And since I’m a Bobby Labonte slappy, I’ll agree with him. Terry beats Marcis. But the fact that Dave was even in this game is a huge compliment to a true independent man.
Just like the “other bracket,” making at least one choice from the heart isn’t a bad thing.
Marcus did more with less than any other driver in NASCAR history.
For that alone he gets my vote.
Dave gets my vote. When my son was little Dave and his wife Helen were so nice to him. Dave was truly a fans driver. He knew what made racing and he was a true sportsman.
