Our final Sweet 16 match up in the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie has the fathers of two of NASCAR’s most popular stars squaring off for the final Elite Eight spot in the Bench Racing region. Ironhead against Gentleman Ned.
Dale Earnhardt won 76 times in 676 Cup Series starts and was one of only two seven time series champions. His win total is seventh best all-time. He won consecutive titles three different times and was a series runner-up three times. Earnhardt only won the Daytona 500 once - in ‘98 - but is the all-time leader in wins at Daytona International Speedway with 34.
Ned Jarrett is better known to most fans today as the father of Dale Jarrett and one of NASCAR’s best announcers. But ”Gentleman Ned” won two Sprint Cup Championships in the sixties and had 50 wins - tied for tenth all-time - in 352 career starts. Jarrett won an amazing 28 races during the ‘64 and ‘65 seasons. He actually won the Southern 500 by 14 laps, the largest victory margin in NASCAR history.
Ned defeated the Busch Series demon Jack Ingram in round two and the legendary Cotton Owens in the round of 64. Earnhardt squeaked by Bobby Isaac in a near upset in the opener and bested Rex White in the second. Earnhardt has had some scares and this is his toughest opponent yet. Tell us who you like in the comment section.

If Richard Petty is the King, then Sr. is the Crown Prince. Sorry about that, Ned - and I’ve even met Mr. Jarrett and he truly is a nice guy - just not as great as Earnhardt.
If Ned had continue on wis he career he may have been a top 5 driver all-time so i’m giving him the benefit of the doubt and give him the vote. SR. earned to many wins by wrecking people for my taste. More by being mean than talent. So Ned Jarrett
Dale Sr transformed NASCAR. His untimely death allowed others to change it again. I think he still has an impact. Sr. all the way.
This matchup is the epitome of the “what if” brigade. What if Senior had not lost his life; what if Ned had not retired early?
Senior is said to have been able to “see” air move and thus ride the draft perfectly. Ned may have been the best “pure” driver of all time, and a gentleman driver to boot.
I’m going to side with Keith on this one and duck and cover waiting for the wrath.
Ned gets my vote.

Thanks Steve, You know it always stuck in my mind when Fireball Roberts had his fatal accident Ned stop his car on the track and tried to get Fireball out. I’ve always respected Ned and Steve is right when he said Ned was the best “pure” racer ever.
Ned!!!!
Dale Earnhardt gets my vote over Ned Jarrett. Seven championship’s to two
says a lost even though Ned raced less seasons. Dale’s 174 consecutive races in the top 10 has not been approached by anyone and he is the only driver to
win a Winston Cup race in FOUR decades.
Dale Sr over Ned Jarrett. Dominance for decades. Tied for most championships in the 1980s and had the most championship’s in the 1990s. Only driver who
went from rookie of the year to champion in next season.
Dale Earnhardt is my choice over Ned Jarrett. Seven championship’s in a
16 year period is almost 50 percent. Dale owns many more all-time records
at race tracks and was a master in restrictor plate racing. Ned raced in many
more races per season than Dale and Dale owns almost every major record
in seasons with less than 30 races including most wins, top fives, top tens,
laps led, etc.
SR over Jarrett. No brainer.
Dale over Ned althoug Ned is a class act, Dale was the best ever on the track.
Dale Sr. Nothing more to say.
I must say–I was expecting more buckshot from the Earnhardt supporters. I respect your respect. I think this was THE most difficult match up so far.

I like Ned. Ned was great. A longer career and maybe….
But I’ll take Earnhardt here.
I almost forgot this one. Last week, ON PIT ROW, James Hylton had nothing but praise for both drivers. But he took Ned.
[...] Earnhardt got by the popular Ned Jarrett in the round of 16 while Junior Johnson won a close one with Awesome Bill Elliott. I think this will be a tough one. Closer than most and maybe the toughest match up yet. Tell us who you think should move on to the final, four-wide finish. [...]
