March 23, 2009 1:25 pm EDT 8 CommentsTwo of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers who between them own only 12 career Cup series victories are paired in this interesting first round match of the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie.
Alan Kulwicki won the ‘92 Winston Cup championship by just 10 points in the closest margin up to that time. He overcame a 278 deficit in the last six races that year to do so. His career was cut short by a fatal plane crash in ‘93 on the way to a race in Bristol. He finished with 5 career wins in 207 starts. An inspirational owner-driver who invented the Polish Victory Lap.
A J Foyt never ran more than seven times in a NASCAR season. Instead, he focused on Indy Cars and won four Indianapolis 500s. Foyt also won the 24 Hours of LeMans. But NASCAR cares about the ‘72 Daytona 500 win and the six other Cup races he won in 128 starts.
Tough choice, this one. What do you think? Leave a comment. And check out some of the other bracket match ups too.

Cup champion > a handful of hand picked wins
Kulwicki
(and this is limited to NASCAR right?)
Kulwicki–Polish Victory Lap says it all.
Hey Boomer - I didn’t pick the “50 Greatest” list. Fifty hand-picked France Family friends did. And Foyt made the list. To be honest, if you are going to pick a list of the 50 - or 64 - greatest DRIVERS to ever run in NASCAR, I think A J Foyt would be there (along with Mario Andretti and - yes Steve - Dan Gurney). But you don’t have to vote for him. Foyt started a TON of USAC stack car races BTW - and won a bunch too.
This is a tough match up. Kulwicki is everybody’s favorite underdog. And he had Hooters for a sponsor too! But I’m taking Foyt.
How can you vote against ANYTHING related to Hooters?
Not I, a fool I’m not. The eyes… um… I mean the ayes have it!
Charlie as long as you’re giving a nod to Mario and Dan Gurney, Parnelli Johns may as well be tossed into that category also.
Agreed Marc. And Jim Clark too.
Foyt was the better driver. Period. Kulwicki never raced anything but stocks; AJ raced everything and won in everything.
This is a greatest driver tourney. I’ll take AJ Foyt.
I’ll take Foyt too, since as Matt reminds us… it’s a driver tourney. You just can’t look over the rest of AJ’s accomplishments.
