There was a press conference this afternoon at Auto Club Speedway to announce sponsorship by Aflac for Beads of Courage, which provides arts-in-medicine programs for children with serious illness. The conference featured Carl Edwards, a host of people from Aflac, some folk from the charity, and a duck. A real duck, which for its part looked like it’d much rather be paddling around a pond.
The presser also included a cuter than cute seven year old girl who’s presently battling leukemia, who seemed neither fazed nor terribly impressed with the whole event. She clutched her stuffed Aflac duck, quietly demurring when asked to say much of anything. She did, however, correctly identify Edwards as her favorite driver.
The girl’s father spoke, or at least tried to. He quickly and understandably choked up when talking about his daughter’s fight.
At which point the softer side of Carl Edwards came to the fore.
He leaned over, touched the father on the arm, and said, “And she’s got great taste in clothes.”
The father’s tears quickly turned to laughter.
She was wearing an Aflac jacket.
