Soliciting Solutions for Boring Racing - a Contest
by Charlie Turner
I'm Charlie Turner co-host of the syndicated, mostly NASCAR radio show On Pit Row. Thanks for stopping by OnPitRow.com and the Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie blog. Oh yeah, Steve is an idiot.

To paraphrase one of my favorite lines all-time from a racing movie…
“Pete, do you ever get tired of (substitute “bored with”) the racing? Lately, sometimes I get very tired.” (ditto)
Ferrari driver Jean Pierre Sarti to Yamura pilot Pete Aaron in “Grand Prix”.
As popular as NASCAR is, people are never satisfied. That’s probably good. Mike Mulhern has a proposition to make things more exciting…
A simple proposition – give one bonus point for each lap a driver leads. If a man leads 150 laps at Daytona, he gets 150 bonus points, for example.
Or perhaps, considering tracks are different lengths, give one bonus point for each mile a driver leads.
Mike contends, and I agree, that putting all of that value on leading laps would make for much more competitive racing for the lead. More lead passes - more exciting races.
That’s what he thinks. What about you? How would you spice up Cup racing?
Put your suggestion in the comment section and I’ll pick a favorite or two and send those people a copy of “Daytona 500: 50 Years of the Great American Race” from A&E
Home Video.
Our last contest was won by the Reverend Jim. Don’t let him win again.

There’s a number of ways to make NASCAR Cup Series racing better and yes awarding points is one of them.
One suggestion would be tires, have Goodyear bring two different compounds to the track, one soft tire and one hard tire. Teams can use both types throughout the race, the softer compound is for speed in a short run while the harder compound is for long green flag runs. It’s a pit strategy that gives a new element on the racetrack.
The tires would work a little like the Champ Car World Series had last season, but with more then one or two sets.
I would also like to see a mandatory caution flag 40 miles into a race, that would get the drivers in for changes early and fans wouldn’t see so many cars being lapped at the start.
Well the tires would be the one I would like to see and it would have helpped at Atlanta.
1. Le Mans start.
2. All events over 400 laps broken into two segments, second segment to be run clockwise.
3. All road course events will be competed with native wildlife as active participants. (charity B-B-Q held immediately after checkered flag.)
4. TV commentary piped into the grandstands. (well, ok it’ll still be boring but the stands will empty early allowing handicapped fans, the deaf ones, easier access to the exits)
5. Traffic cones. Made of concrete. Any and all backstretches longer than 300 feet will have a slalom course laid out utilizing concrete traffic cones. Assess 50pt deduction to drivers final race tally for each cone hit. (one thousand pt bonus if winning driver pushes one cone across the line as the checkered flag waves.)
6. Pit babes! - Brolly Babes! - Race Babes! A modern version of Winkie Louise! (G-String and high speed slo-mo cameras mandatory)
7. And clowns, ya gotta have clowns. (Brian France & and that nut over at Full Throttle [and Steve] excluded)
8. Jocko Flocko the Sequel. All 43 starters names are drawn prior to start with the driver with the “winning” and lowest number having to compete with a Rhesus monkey as co-pilot. (driver and monkey fitted with helmet cams)
NOTE, as its a foregone conclusion, Charlie you can send my prize through normal channels. The DVD will be used as waiting room entertainment at Foil Hat Productions LLC.
The scary thing is that Marc is actually serious.
I call my idea the Bounty Hunt. It actually rewards mediocrity while making mediocrity more exciting.
1. Any driver who takes out a car that looks faster than Dale Earnhardt, Jr’s will be rewarded 350 championship points.
2. During the last fifteen laps of any race where Dale Earnhardt, Jr is racing, any surviving driver that has a faster car than Jr’s will be rewarded 50 championship points for every lap he resists contesting for the lead, plus a 200 point bonus for letting Jr win.
What about instead of having a random draw for qualifying order have the drivers arm wrestle for it?
And make everyone a go-or-go-home driver.
So who won?
