As far as restrictor plate tracks go…Talladega is the “Mac-Daddy”! Constructed in the in 1960’s over an old abandoned airport, this track offers some the best restrictor plate racing NASCAR has to offer. At 2.66 miles this the largest oval track raced in today’s NASCAR events.
Often referred to as simply… “Dega”… it is owned by International Speedway Corporation, and controlled by the France family. This facility can seat up to 175,000 fans.
Speeds in excess of 200 mph were a one time commonplace at Talladega. Talladega Superspeedway has the record for the fastest recorded speed by a NASCAR stock car in a closed oval course, with the record of 216.309 mph set by Rusty Wallace on June 9, 2004. Wallace circled the 2.66-mile trioval in 44.270 seconds! Go Rusty!
Above the TOAD offers up a plate of his own “restricted” fuel flow!

I originally created this frame in 1997 to celebrate the opening of the then “new” Texas Motor Speedway.
Located in Denton, County Texas, just outside of Fort Worth, the Texas Motor Speedway offers exciting racing for the Sprint and Nationwide guys. Managed by Eddie Gossage… this track has become a fan favorite because of his innovative marketing skills.
The Texas Motor Speedway was once considered the fastest non-restrictor plate track on the circuit with qualifying speeds of over 192 mph, and corner entry speeds over 200 mph. As the track’s surface wore the speeds diminished, and Atlanta now has the distinction.
Dale Earnhardt Junior won his first Cup race, and his his first Busch race in Texas!

March 23, 2009 4:03 pm CDT 3 CommentsToday…
I went to tha grocery store ‘n saw ahh whole cold cabinet ahh fully prepared Sushi!
This visual left me queasy… ‘n reminded me that I had ahh TOAD-TOON that incorporated this… ahhh hmmm… popular food source that I did back in 1996.
I remember back when I did tha original frame that tha logistics of Race Teams from Mooresville, NC goin’ tahh Japan wuz ahh huge concern. Dale Earnhardt Senior, and Junior both attended. I think tha teams had tahh send their cars, ‘n all related equipment over via ocean freighter weeks in advance. Tha drivers ‘n all personnel flew commercially days prior!
Here are some interesting facts about the Suzuka City race in 1996.
1) It was the first time that both Dale Sr. and Dale Jr. actually raced each other.
2) Rusty Wallace won the event.
3) On a sad note, pace car driver Elmo Langley died from a heart attack while driving the pace car during an exhibition event. Elmo was the pace car driver that Dale Sr. would periodically “bump” from behind to everyone’s amusement… except for maybe Elmo’s!
4) In 1997 at another event at Suzuka City, because of rain, Goodyear used their much talked about “Rain Tires” for the first time in history!
A special credit goes to Dale Sr. who actually referred to sushi as fishin’ bait!

Since we got a week off with no racin’…
I thought I’d address some of the more taboo subjects of NASCAR.
Today’s marketin’ people don’t wanna revisit the past… but I do!
That’s why… I’m bringin’ up my original 1996 cartoon that featured Pit Road Toad talkin’ ‘bout Moonshine!
I grew up in a place called Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke sits in a valley between the Appalachian and Allegany Mountains. Of course this geographic was conducive to the manufacturing of “Corn Likker”. It was extremely hard for me not to be offered some of this stuff every once in while! All I can say is… “It will make yahh take back things yahh never stole”… Very strong stuff!
The area just southwest of Roanoke contains the foothills of North Carolina, and Virginia… where some of the first actual Stock Car Racing Events took place in the 1940’s, and 50’s
Back then… “Moonshine Runners”… like Junior Johnson showed-up at the local tracks to display their hard earned mechanical and driving prowess by racing their modified street cars against one another. It was this weekend activity that actually spawned the sport of Stock Car Racing.
If anyone has any other slang terms for Moonshine… please post them in the comments section below. The best suggestion will get a special credit for the poster on this cartoon and article!
As a footnote… just the other day I read that former NASCAR driver Dean Combs was charged with runnin’ a still within the very shadow of the now closed North Wilkesboro Speedway. I’m providing a link to the story on MSNBC. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29534402/”

Hey… Y’all… I’m new to this site… tha dude that draws me (Art Almond) is considerin’ getting’ out of racin’ cartoonin’ …cuz ahh “Digger”!
We have both been readin’ all tha negative posts on the various blogs on ahh whole myriad of web-sites concernin’ “Digger” in racin’!
When I wuz first conceived in 1995… Art’s intentions were to use me fer ahh spokesperson… ‘r… “spokestoad”… ’n Stock Car Racin’ humorous illustrations… He ultimately planed to utilize me in educatin’ folk’s ’bout Stock Car Racin’ History… as well as sum various other technical aspects of our sport!
Now… he ain’t sure if this is such ahh good idea !
Please reply to this post if yahh want me ’round on Bench Racin’ with Steve ‘n Charlie!
Sincerely,
Pit Road Toad
P.S. Tha economy is real bad…’n… I ain’t sure if anyone’s hirin’ any redneck TOADS!!
