Fantasy Pick’Em: 2011 Aaron’s 499

Before you even read another word of this column, keep the following in mind. We’re trying to predict fantasy NASCAR at a restrictor-plate superspeedway. There is literally no rhyme or reason to this whatsoever. There will almost undoubtedly be a giant accident or three that will eliminate 20 cars from contention, and more likely than not the following three drivers will all be involved.
That being said, let’s start the guesswork.
Look, nobody predicted that Trevor Bayne would win the Daytona 500 (except, well, for me… and way to drop the timestamp, Twitter). Nobody predicted Brad Keselowski to win at Talladega in a Phoenix Racing car two years ago, either. That’s how much of a crapshoot restrictor-plate events are. They’re the great equalizer – 36 races on these tracks would likely produce 36 different winners.
It’s not about speed, it’s about survival. But these three are generally good at it. You know how it goes – my pick first, then an alternate, then my dark horse. Don’t be totally shocked.
Carl Edwards: Edwards has been the strongest, most consistent driver in the sport thus far this year. That’s probably going to be more of a curse than a blessing this weekend, as you think that bad luck is going to have to get to him eventually. You also wonder, after the wreck in 2009 that saw his car go flying, if Edwards has that nagging conservatism in him on restrictor plate tracks. But that conservatism might help him if it causes him to stay way back of the wrecks and make it to the final few laps.
Brad Keselowski: Keselowski’s actually got three top-10s in four Talladega starts, including the win in his track debut, giving him a 13.2 average finish that tops all active drivers. Consistency is a difficult concept at Talladega, but Keselowski’s as good as any.
Trevor Bayne: Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice… well, the point is NOT to fool me twice. Even if you think Bayne’s got more Michael Waltrip in him than Jeff Gordon – and I think you’re wrong if you do – some drivers are just incredible on the restrictor plate tracks, and for all we know, Bayne will be one of them throughout his career.
Kevin Conway Needs Help from His Sponsor

The first three weeks of the NASCAR season couldn’t have gotten off to a better start.
The stories that have come from this early season have been all that NASCAR could have hoped for. From twenty-year-old Trevor Bayne winning the “Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing” to a resurgence by veteran Jeff Gordon the first two weeks were storybookesque.
As week three headed to Sin City and all that Las Vegas has to offer it became apparant that NASCAR may just have pulled out of the malaise that it had been stuck in for the past three years. TV ratings are up for the race broadcasts and more importantly; non-main stream media has again found NASCAR’s personalities interesting.
To add even more excitement to the mix; Robby Gordon and Kevin Conway have a dust-up in the garage over monies owed from each party to the other, resulting in Conway filing a police report against Gordon. Kevin Conway’s sponsor Extenze supposedly owes Gordon money while Gordon supposedly owes Conway money. This is never a good situation unless you are the type that love reality TV. The Conway -Gordon tift is the kind of publicity you can’t buy.
All the jokes about Conway standing up to Gordon aside; Conway never should have let this difference of opinion make it to a police report. Conway’s handling of the altercation says as much about him, his sponsor and his place in the NASCAR community as is inability to drive a race car.
Sorry Kevin–take a couple of your sponsor’s products and man-up.

Let Youth Be Served

Trevor Bayne’s unexpected win in the Daytona 500 shows once again racing is a young mans sport.
As a fan of NASCAR racing the first driver I ever rooted for was LeeRoy Yarbrough in the late 60′s and early 70′s. Through most of the 70′s after LeeRoy dropped out of the NASCAR world with mysterious ailments; I didn’t have an allegiance to any one driver until Bill Elliott came on the scene toward the end of that decade.
Elliott captured my attention because of his family run team out of Georgia when most NASCAR teams had already migrated to the area around Charlotte. At the time there weren’t a lot of teams running Fords and I have always held an affinity for the brand. So Bill, Dan and Ernie were MY guys.
I have remained an Elliott fan throughout his career even when he closed his team and went to drive for Ray Evernham and the resurrected Dodge factory effort.
When it was announce that Bill would drive for the Wood Brothers in a part time effort I believed in my heart, if not totally in my mind, that the combination could bring back the glory of a time gone by when David Pearson took the part time program and won races. Pearson won races; he wasn’t interested in winning championships. Championships were for guys like Richard Petty.
My hope for catching lightening in a bottle with the Wood Brothers-Bill Elliott combination kept lessening with every missed opportunity. The Woods would enter Elliott in places that he had run well in the past; places like Atlanta. The combination never seemed to work. Maybe the team wasn’t ready to win yet.
I was still surprised when the Woods elected to take Bill out of the car in late 2010 to give the displaced Bayne a one-off. Bayne had been released earlier by Michael Walltrip Racing from his Nationwide Series ride. Needless to say he ran well enough at Texas, finishing a respectable seventeenth, to make the Woods have to make a decision for 2011.
The decision to part ways with Elliott and give Bayne the ride for 2011 obviously was a winner for both Bayne and the race team that hasn’t seen a win at Daytona since 1976. One win does not a career make; but to take the iconic #21 to victory lane in only his second Sprint Cup race and just a day after his twenteth birthday could make the Wood Brothers seem like geniuses.
It may be way too early to proclaim a changing of the guard, but for this NASCAR fan it’s time to move on to a new phase in the sport we love.
