The inaugural Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway was a little tough to get to for many fans, and a few drivers, but worth the effort. Cool track. I hope you like the photos.

They held a big, old fashioned traffic snarl-up in Northern Kentucky and the NASCAR media was in shock.
Fans, and even a driver or two, got caught up in a long, hot, frustrating jam on the roads accessing (sort-of) Kentucky Speedway for the first ever Sprint Cup race there.
In the track media center, there was more tweeting about traffic than anything competition related.
Denny Hamlin was caught up in it all. No chopper ride for Denny.
Atlanta Motor Speedway’s president was supposedly out there directing traffic.
Bruton Smith blamed it all on the Governor of Kentucky, saying sic “the Guv knows that I71 sucks”.
And @Kenny_Wallace, who always tells it like it is tweeted this:
My thoughts on the Traffic Jam: “This is the way it used to be” back when tracks were SOLD OUT.
And Kenny’s right. The Quaker State 400 was a sellout. 100,000 NASCAR fans paid to be there. It was tough to get to the track, and that needs to get better. You know that it will too. But I bet you that Michigan International Speedway longs for the days of the MIS mess. So do all of the venues.
Would have been a boring day in the media center if not for that traffic jam. Slow news day today.

It’s been a whirlwind season for young Joey Logano.
(Note: this post also appears on my regular website, www.thecatfishshow.com)
The Middletown, CT native is a talent that rarely comes along. Regular readers know how highly I think about him. This is a guy that won the East Series title at the age of 17. He followed that up by dominating the ARCA race at Rockingham this May in preparation for his Nationwide Series debut, which came at Dover this May. He would go on to capture poles at Nashville and Kentucky, winning in Kentucky in just his third series start. Logano followed up with consecutive runner-up finishes at Milwaukee and Gateway and top-10 runs at IRP, Watkins Glen, and Michigan. The kid’s ready to contend at any level you put him in.
For Gibbs, this meant not going outside of the organization to find a replacement for Tony Stewart in the #20 Home Depot Camry. Why go through that process and deal with possible chemistry issues when the best choice is already there? Logano’s been a teammate to both returning drivers next season, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch this year. Hamlin in particular has taken an active role in Logano’s development, which will only accelerate the learning curve. Logano may actually be on the same level as most drivers in the COT, since he has been the primary test driver for the cars since their inception. I’m going on record right now and saying that Logano wins in 2009 and qualifies for the Chase. I’m that confident in his ability, not to mention the JGR camp and the quality of the team he will inherit.
As for the rest of 2008, Logano is looking at running 6 Sprint Cup races in the #02 – Richmond, New Hampshire, Kansas, Lowes, Atlanta, and Texas, 9 Nationwide races in the #20, as well as the ARCA race at Talladega in order to garner some plate experience before the Daytona 500 this fall.

It’s a New Racing Game with NASCAR’s New Car

The National Stock Car Commission has denied the appeal by DEI to overturn the penalties issued to the Bass Pro Shops team at Daytona. No surprise there.
NASCAR has proven this year that they don’t want you messin’ with the Ugly Little Toad, that is the New Car. It’s the France Family toy and they will decide how you play with it.
But that fact really changes a big part of what auto racing is all about.
Last Tuesday, one of our guests on INSIDE ARCA was Shawn Umphries, trackside services representative for Mr Gasket and Mallory Ignitions. During a break, Shawn, Steve and I were talking about what we would discuss with Patrick Donahue, our next guest on the show who is the crew chief for Scott Speed’s Red Bull Racing Toyota in the ARCA RE/MAX Series.
Patrick’s car had gotten nailed for a height infraction after winning last weeks race at Kentucky Speedway – an obvious topic to get into. Shawn has twenty plus years with his company and has been around racing a lot. He made the point that as a team owner, or sponsor, you want the guys running your teams to get caught pushing the envelope sometimes. It means that they are doing their jobs.
Jeff Hammond, in his blog on FoxSports.com today, said this…
I love bending the rules, don’t get me wrong. When I came into the sport, that was the nature of the beast. But now you can’t mess with the beast because it’ll eat you every time.
So the game of stock car racing at its highest level has been changed. NASCAR has taken something basic away. It kind of makes it less interesting.
