June 5, 2011 8:46 am UTC No CommentsA long day in Chicagoland was just a bit too short for a dominant Carl Edwards but just the right length for good guy Justin Allgaier. Allgaier’s Turner Motorsports Chevy had about one gulp of fuel more than Carl’s Roush Mustang so Justin started his gasless coast a little closer to the finish line, and beat Edwards there in the NASCAR Nationwide Series’ STP 300.
Afterwards, there couldn’t have been a much better vibe in the garage and in victory lane than there was for good guy Justin. Even Edwards said, “if I had to get beat….”.
Early in the day, I got a chance to take a a few pace car laps around Chicagoland Speedway and Allgaier was the driver. It was a blast, and Justin very patiently explained the different lines through the corners and some of the idiosyncrasies of this particular mile-and-a-half track.
He had been quoted Friday that he considered Chicagoland his home track. He told me that it was probably his favorite too. After the race, it definitely was, for sure.

Watching tonight’s Food City 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.
Maybe this old Grand National Series is returning to what a whole bunch of NASCAR fans seem to at least think that they remember. A driver development series.
We spoke with NNWS Director Joe Balash On Pit Row a few weeks back and Joe indicated that was a goal of his.
And even though Carl Edwards is battling David Ragan with a green, white checkered finish about to happen, the days of fields full of Bushwackers seem past.
The GWC finish got short circuited when several cars got together back in the pack, giving Ragan his second Nationwide win. Edwards came second and Brad Keselowski got by Kevin Harvick for third.
That still sounds like the Buschwackin’ days, but the race didn’t seem so.
For one thing, Ragan and Keselowski ARE still developing drivers. Early on, the Kez got into Penske young gun, Justin Allgaier, cutting the no. 12′s tire and ruining what might have been Justin’s first win. He had the car. He has the talent too.
There are still plenty of Cup drivers competing in the junior series. But talented Michael Annett was top ten, and fast. Michael McDowell was 10th. Matt Carter, son of long time NASCAR team owner Travis Carter, finished 12th, on the lead lap, in a one-off start that I hope leads to more. Matt was ARCA RE/Max Rookie of the Year in 2008 and needs a break.
The presence of the Sprint Cup guys make it a tough place to win. But developing talent should rise to the top. That’s what happened with Keselowski. His talent earned him a big break with J R Motorsports in 2008, which led to more opportunities with Hendrick Motorsports. Today he signed a contract with Penske Racing to drive full time in Cup.
But he honed his chops in the Nationwide Series the last two years, competing with the big boys.

I just read something disturbing from my friend the Diecast Dude. It’s raining in California.
Well make it stop! There’s a race out there tonight in at Irwindale Speedway and I need it to run as scheduled. I’m not sure my rather shaky well being can take a weather delay in THE FIRST RACE OF THE YEAR! Let it rain in Florida tomorrow – or all weekend. Those sporty car guys will drive in anything and I kind of like watching road racing in the rain.
But that’s just me.
The best thing I’ve read this week about the state of the Kingdom of France was Fox Sports’ Lee Spencer’s piece about the five questions that NASCAR fans deserve to have answered by the sports’ royalty. Here’s a favorite part…
“with chairman Brian France up top, the person steering the ship should have every bit as much passion for running the sport as the people who spend their hard-earned money to sit in the stands every weekend.
Unlike his father and grandfather, Brian France just doesn’t fit that bill. No time was it more evident than when he stated last December that he “will not have a 30-year run like my father for a variety of reasons.”
“Somebody has got to stand up and take charge, somebody who can rally the troops and infuse enthusiasm to fans. That person is currently not in charge of NASCAR.”
The Catfish Show has a piece on the driver he thinks will be Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year. I like Matt’s choice, but I’ll take Justin Allgaier, who just got full season sponsorship for his Penske ride.
Steve has been talking - or is it squawking - a lot about the potential for a resurgence of the start-and-parkers of some years back. The NASCAR Insiders have a great article on that too…
And the high priestess of Church of the Great Oval has begun her annual astrological projections of NASCAR’s best, starting with Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson.
Now stop the rain. I wanna watch a real race tonight.

October 15, 2008 3:03 pm UTC No CommentsIt was a wild weekend. ARCA brought off one of the best Championship Weekends in the organization’s history thanks to perfect weather, a convincing ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series finale and Justin Allgaier’s come-from-behind ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship.
Oh, and there was that little thing with Scott Speed and Ricky Stenhouse Jr, taking each other out of the race and championship. There was that.
Steve and I wrapped up the weekend with an ON PIT ROW on the Road version of The Fast Lap Show. Watch it here.
