It seems Busch the elder, oft times is overshadowed by his younger sib’s antics. But he, like his bro, has always been very accomodating when it comes to pics. Here are some that Glenn and myself took in 2010.

Abandon ship! Abandon ship!

That is, or maybe should be, the line of thought – theme of advice – you get from the NASCAR prognosticators, when it comes to the Roush-Fenway Racing drivers heading into Talladega.

The Roushketeers’ cars have vibrations. And there ARE no Good Vibrations in a Cup Car at a Plate Track.

Paint it however you want, but after two practices at Talladega, the following was the most positive comment that I read from a Roush driver (Greg Biffle) (thanks to SceneDaily.com)

“Depending on the vibration, it blurs your vision a little bit because your head is vibrating against the headrest, or you’ve got to hold your head off the headrest,” he said. “You forget about it after they throw the green flag.”

Uh, no you don’t. You try to ignore it after the green flag. Then you kind of wait for the worst. No confidence – no win.

Bad Vibrations.

Tony Stewart wins smokin’ hot Pepsi MAX 400 at Auto Club Speedway

It’s never dull with Tony Stewart in the house.

In a race that saw the majority of his Chase competition falter in one fashion or another, Stewart earned a hard-fought victory in today’s Pepsi MAX 400 at Auto Club Speedway, besting Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson in a ferocious finish to a wild, wide-open affair.

The problems for Chase participants started early, when Greg Biffle blew an engine on Lap 40. His demise foretold the day for the remainder of the Roush drivers: Carl Edwards’ car stopped dead on the track, eventually finishing 34th, 13 laps down. David Ragan finished 32nd after a late-race accident in which he came up on Kurt Busch in Turn 4, and Matt Kenseth ended the day in 30th after an engine failure on the final restart.

For a good part of the day, it appeared that the old man down the road was on the road to victory, as Mark Martin led a good chunk of laps. A poor pit stop on Lap 115 shuffled him backwards, and he never fully recovered, staying close to the front but finishing sixth.

Other Chasers who faced the ill winds of fortune included Kyle Busch, who lost an engine on Lap 155, and Jeff Gordon falling victim to his own mistake, being caught speeding on pit road. He eventually fought his way back to ninth.

Back to the winner. Stewart came up through the field, taking the lead three-quarters of the way through the race. His strongest competition came from Bowyer, who lead numerous laps but in the end was unable to catch Smoke.

The race featured numerous nip-and-tuck moments, with cars often staying far closer to each other than is the norm at Auto Club. Usually the track fans love to hate, today it offered superb action from start to finish.

Johnson, by dint of his third place finish, now leads the Chase by 36 points over Denny Hamlin, who after starting in the back of the field following a post-qualifying transmission change finished eighth.

The Chase resumes this Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
