Untitled PostBig Bill France once said something on the order of “the fan needs to know who won the race when he leaves the track.” That philosophy has held since NASCAR’s early history and no win has been taken from the driver who took the checkered flag first.

But Carl Edwards came close. NASCAR announced the penalties for the #99 car’s infractions found during post-race inspection at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Edwards was docked 100 driver points and lost the 10 bonus points for the win - the points that are so crucial in separating race winners from the pack in the Chase. Jack Roush lost 100 owner’s points and crew chief Bob Osborne was fined $100 grand and suspended six races.

No doubt Roush-Fenway will appeal and given the way the National Stock Car Racing Commission has been softening and sometimes reversing NASCAR penalties this week, maybe Carl has a chance. The commission has been busy since the Daytona 500 and their rulings so far have run counter to the historical trend of upholding over 2/3’s of all NASCAR penalties.  Oil tank lid violations have been among the most frequently reversed, or at least reduced this week.

Supposedly there was a photo circulating the NASCAR community this morning that showed Carl Edwards doing his back flip with the uncovered oil tank clearly visible on the car. Do you see anything illegal in our pic?

This kind of penalty is not unheard off beyond the bonus points being stripped from Carl Edwards. Both Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon recieved penalites like this last year and finsihed 1-2 in the standings. However this is as close as I hae ever to NASCAr takinga win away and if this penalty stands that is in fact what they have done.

In the department of full disclosure, I use to wokr for Jack Roush, and at FIO I ahve writen many articles about how the case can be made that they have stolen titles from him in the past, one from Mark martin, and one in the Trucks with Greg Biffle. I am not saying that is what is happening here, I am saying that is what it looks like. I would expect the NSCC to reduce this penalty to a suitable 25 owner driver points and increase the fines for Bob Osborne. The 6 week suspension is the standard and will probably stand.

Other then that Iam glad to have picked Carl Edwards to win the race in Atlanta. Now he will have some fire in the belly and Robby Reiser on his Pitbox. 3 in a row backflips a plenty.

Hey Josh. Thanks for the comment. I think the only Cup driver to get the 100 point penalty last year was Kurt Busch. Gordon and Johnson lost their crew chiefs for 6 races and fines were levied, but I don’t believe that they lost 100 points each. Kurt did, and it nearly cost him the Chase.

Jack Roush as victim? That one is tough for me to swallow. If you push the limits too far and get caught, it’s cheating. Now I happen to like cheaters - innovators, whatever you want to call them. But I don’t think Jack has been singled out by NASCAR.

    Survey says… -100 points.

    Charlie,

Like i said I am not making that argument but when we tke in their whole body of work “against” him it appears that way. Espically that 22 point penalty or whatever it was that cost martin the title in 1991. Don’t quote me exaclt my brain isn’t what it once was. Also the Truck penalty levied agaisnt Biffle costing him the truck title only led to them dominating the circuit that following year. Letus not forget the farse up at Loudon last season.

I don’t think Jack is a victim not at all, but these kind of things were penalites appear to be a little harsher for his teams makes it appear they are out to get him.

Charlie, Junior got smacked with a hundred for his funny wing at Darlington.

Hey now Josh, Greg caught a break at Kansas. Not that I was complaining, he’s a great guy.

I won’t disagree against the perception, but to me that’s all it is. Perception. Just like the perceptions out there that NASCAR favors Junior, or Rick Hendrick.

OK, those are more conspiracy types of perception, but we all know (at least those with some common sense and a lack of delusional lunacy) that for there to be anything like that in the garage would be impossible. Too many people would have to be involved, and at least one little crew member somewhere would open their mouth for the cash.

[...] it was no slam dunk. Bob Osborne and the no. 99 team nearly stole it with the “ejecting oil tank lid”. Nice try [...]
