March 22, 2009 2:00 pm CDT 6 CommentsSwervin’ Irvan goes up against a Cup champion in this first round match in the On Pit Radio Region of the NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie.
Ernie Irvan was selected as one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers for a career that included a Daytona 500 among 15 total wins. Ernie had consecutive poles at Indy in ‘97 and ‘98 and a best ever 5th in Series points in 1991. Made a remarkable recovery from a devastating accident by finishing sixth at North Wilkesboro in ‘95.
Bobby Labonte was the Winston Cup champion in 2000 with Joe Gibbs Racing. Labonte has 21 wins, 114 top fives and 196 top tens. He was Cup series runner-up in 1999, won the Brickyard 400 in 2000 and was the ‘91 Busch Series champion. Bobby and Terry Labonte are NASCAR’s only brothers to win the Sprint Cup Series championship.
Irvan’s career ended too soon and that hurts him in the all-time stat sweepstakes. Bobby Labonte may have sacrificed some of his prime years trying to help resurrect Petty Enterprises. Who’s your pick to move on to round two? Leave a comment with us.

Formula One has changed the way they determine their “World Champion”. Ed Hinton of ESPN likes it. The Catfish doesn’t. Read what Matt Mercer has to say at the Catfish Show.
Bruce’s NASCAR Bits is into numerology this week - maybe because we skipper the Tight in Turn 2 post this week. Read what he says about “3″s in the Nationwide Series here.
NASCAR Ranting and Raving has a couple contests going on. So get in on the free swag over there.
And a bit of ON PIT ROW news: Steve got the chance to interview Ask.com Racing’s Bobby Labonte this morning for our next show on Tuesday March 24. You’ll be able to listen to the whole thing Tuesday at 5 PM EDT. Steve tells me that he asked Labonte about the differences in Bristol and Martinsville. But he also got Bobby to make a couple of bracket picks in our NASCAR 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament. Watch the comments for Bobby’s picks.

March 19, 2009 3:17 pm CDT 19 CommentsNASCAR’s first super star and its last truly successful owner-driver face off in a first round match up of our March Madness - NASCAR’s 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie.
Glen “Fireball” Roberts won 33 times in 207 starts. Roberts won the 1962 Daytona 500, had 93 top fives, 122 top tens and 32 career poles. He was nicknamed “Fireball” because he was a hard-throwing high school pitcher. Roberts died after an accident in the 1964 Coca-Cola 600.
Ricky Rudd drove for many of NASCAR’s legendary owners: Richard Childress, Bud Moore, Rick Hendrick, Robert Yates and the Wood Brothers. He hold the record for most consecutive starts, 788. Rudd had 23 wins, including the 1997 Brickyard 400, 29 poles and was runner up for the 1991 Cup Series Championship.
Tell us who you like in this showdown. Leave a comment. Which one of these great drivers - both selected members of NASCAR’s 50 greatest - will move on to the round of 32?

NASCAR’s version of March Madness probably happens this Sunday on the half mile high-banks of Bristol Motor Speedway. But at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie, we couldn’t wait. I mean, why should round ball fans have all the bracket bragging rights?
We started with the list of the 50 Greatest NASCAR Drivers that NASCAR came up with during NASCAR’s 50th Anniversary season in 1998. Then we added 14 more of our own choosing. That gave us our own list of the top 64 NASCAR drivers of all time.
Steve and I thought about trying to seed the drivers. For about two minutes. Instead, we went for randomness.
From there, we had a computer mix the list a couple times and slotted everyone into the familiar 64 player, single elimination, tournament bracket. You can see - and download - NASCAR’s 64 Greatest Drivers Tourney Brackets in PDF right here.

Our plan for round one - the round of 64 - is to post the individual match ups at the rate of four per day here at the Bench Racing Blog. Each post will give a short synopsis of the driver match up. The winning driver will be determined by your feedback.
You can leave that feedback two different ways. Either leave a your thoughts in the comment section of the individual post or send a direct message via twitter to us - we are @onpitrow on twitter.
For twitter followers we will send a message in twitter that reads something like….
NASCAR’s 64 Greatest Drivers Match Up: Dale Earnhardt vs Jeff Gordon
You can then send a message back that says….
@onpitrow Jeff Gordon
We’ll tally up the votes and the winner will move on. The first round match ups will stay active for 48 hours. We have enough swag to give the ten people who respond the most a nice prize. So sign up on twitter and follow us. Down load your bracket and play NASCAR’s 64 Greatest Drivers Tournament at Bench Racing with Steve and Charlie . Four first round match ups will be posted later today.
Update: We decided to leave the comments open until 48 hours after the last post goes live for the first round. Keep the votes coming.
